Atlanta United want Agustín Almendra - Among club record signings?
Gabriel Heinze will become Atlanta United's next head coach. The Argentine will take over the Five Stripes ahead of the 2021 season. According to a report by The Athletic and TyC Sports journalist César Luis Merlo, Agustín Almendra could be Heinze's first signing at his new club.
The 20-year-old central midfielder is considered Heinze's prime target in the January transfer window. A central midfielder, Almendra has managed two goals and two assists in 33 games for Boca Juniors. Under contract until 2022, Almendra's sizeable market value of $12.1 million could make a transfer difficult, however.
The Athletic reported that Almendra has fallen out with the staff. But despite internal problems at the club, there is a significant market for the midfielder. Within MLS, Inter Miami were previously interested in Almendra. European teams have also been interested, at least one Bundesliga team, for example, is scouting the player.
That indicates that the price is unlikely to come down far below Almendra's current market value. Only twice in the club's history, have Atlanta United paid more than $10 million for a new player. Almendra could soon join that list.
