Cedric Teuchert draws St. Louis CITY SC interest - Hannover 96 shut down transfer

With Nicholas Gioacchini off to Como 1907, St. Louis CITY SC are now in search for a potential replacement. Transfermarkt can confirm an initial report by Bild and Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg that Hannover 96 forward Cedric Teuchert is on the list as a possible replacement for US men’s national team striker Gioacchini. Although the interest is there, a transfer isn’t close and could be off the table entirely depending on the financial demands set by the 2. Bundesliga side. Furthermore, Hannover 96 declared in a press statement on Tuesday that they will not allow the forward to leave this January. 

In truth a deal to see Teuchert join the MLS club this winter was always considered difficult. St. Louis CITY SC aren’t interested in signing any new player to a Designated Player deal. In other words, the average salary and transfer fee over the entire period of the deal will have to be less than $1.65m per season. That means reports by Bild linking the player with a big-money move and a seven-figure salary in Major League Soccer are exaggerated. Furthermore, several sources have suggested that up to six players are on the list to replace Gioacchini. Finally, Teuchert's contract is set to expire in the summer and could be available on a free transfer then a scenario that still remains a possibility.

According to the MLSPA salary guide, only five players are currently on a seven-figure salary in St. Louis. Top earner at the club is goalkeeper Roman Bürki, with a guaranteed compensation of $1.63 million. Gioacchini, in the meantime, earned just under $400,000 last season. St. Louis are somewhat reluctant to significantly change the club’s salary structure for what is considered a one-for-one replacement for Gioacchini.

Teuchert would have been a top replacement for Gioacchini. Although the 27-year-old center-forward has struggled with injuries this season, Teuchert has managed nine goals in 13 games across all competitions. Indeed, the former Germany U21 international (eight goals in eight games) has been one of the few bright spots of yet another disappointing Hannover season. 

According to the Transfermarkt database, Teuchert has been directly involved in 28% of Hannover’s goals this season. Together with Can Uzun (Nürnberg) and Christos Tzolis (Düsseldorf), Teuchert ranks fourth in 2. Bundesliga goalscoring (overview). According to Wyscout, Teuchert also ranks fourth in Germany’s second division with 0.69 goals per 90 minutes and tenth with 48% shots on target this season. Whether St. Louis will now move to a different target or make another run at Teuchert remains to be seen.
