Christian Eriksen of Inter Milan is the highest paid bench player in Serie A and both the club and the former Tottenham midfielder want to change that in January. “If Eriksen has not played much until January, he will ask for a transfer himself,” Inter’s CEO Giuseppe Marotta told Sky Italia. “We have to do it without controversy from both sides and evaluate it as a positive transfer, which has not worked from our technical-tactical side,” Marotta said about Eriksen, who arrived from Spurs for €20 million last January.

Since then, the most valuable Danish football player has not been able to match his top performances in the Spurs shirt. Inter convinced Eriksen with a contract running until 2024, which, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, will earn him €7.5 million net a season. His stats to date: seven goal involvements in 35 matches.

A good two weeks ago, Eriksen set the ball rolling publicly and told Danish TV station TV2: “This is not what I dreamed of. It’s a strange situation because the fans want to see me play more and I want that too, but the coach has other ideas and as a player I have to respect them.” After two Serie A games, which the Dane had to follow completely from the bench recently, head coach Antonio Conte brought him on in the 3-0 win over US Sassuolo five minutes before the end on Saturday.

Marotta: “Coach has the right to choose” - Eriksen to return to England?

Marotta said: “Football history is full of cases like this one. It turns out that players do not work in a system. It’s the coach’s job to evaluate that.” Since taking office in the summer of 2019, Conte has been given virtually every player he wanted, including Eriksen. “Last January we took the chance and signed the player for €20 million and he is a very good player. Then there can be problems, but the coach has the right and the duty to choose the eleven players who give him more security,” Marotta continued.

Since the big ones in Spain currently have no funds to realise such a transfer, Eriksen could possibly return to England. “I’m focussing on my game, and when the transfer window opens, we will see if something happens or not,” he said.
