Marcos Lopez joins Feyenoord - San Earthquakes receive "club-record fee"
This article originally stated a transfer fee of €2m for López but has been updated with new information.
Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes have transferred defender Marcos López to Eredivisie giants Feyenoord. In a club statement, the Quakes described the fee as an undisclosed club-record fee. The fee is understood to be in the region of €1.3 million a record fee since the club's return to MLS in 2008.
A source explained to Transfermarkt, that although Eddie Lewis was sold in 2000 to Fulham for a bigger fee, the two clubs, although they share the same history, are not the same financial entities. López is the first seven-figure sale since the club's return to MLS in 2008 (overview) and has signed a contract until 2026 with the Dutch giants.
“Marcos has been a key player for us for the past three and a half years, but this is a move we felt was important to make for many reasons,” said Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch in a club statement. “With an expiring contract and his desire to compete in Europe, this transfer helps him achieve his personal goals with a top club in the Netherlands and allows us to bring in significant compensation for his departure. We sincerely appreciate all of Marcos’ efforts during his time in San Jose and are excited for him to receive this opportunity. We’ll be rooting for his success and continued growth with Feyenoord.”
López originally joined the Quakes from Club Sporting Cristal in a deal worth just €350,000. Since then, the 20-times Peruvian national team player has managed four goals and three assists in 74 games for the MLS side.
