Most goals from set-pieces: Immobile far ahead - Jiménez best in the Premier League
It is well documented that things are going exceptionally well for former Borussia Dortmund striker Ciro Immobile since he arrived at Lazio in the summer of 2016. The 30-year-old is proving his worth consistently, boasting an impressive goals per game ratio. 12 of his 27 Serie A goals, Immobile scored from set-pieces this season and outshines all other players in Europe’s top five leagues as a result.
The player who comes closest to the Lazio forward is SPAL striker Andrea Petagna. The 24-year-old scored eight goals from set-pieces – in total, the left-footed player found the back of the net 11 times in the league. That two players from Serie A sit on top of the ranking is not a coincidence. In the top 20 of the most successful players, the Italian top tier provides for seven spots – the same number as Spanish LaLiga.
Players with the most goals from set-pieces in the top 5 leagues
The Bundesliga has three players in the ranking. Bayern Munich’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski, who scored five goals from set-pieces – the same number as Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) and Neymar (PSG) – is not ranked highest in Germany, however. Union Berlin’s centre-forward Sebastian Andersson was successful seven times from dead-ball situations.
Hinteregger dominates among defenders - Jiménez best in the Premier League
The top 20 are dominated by attack-minded players, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Martin Hinteregger providing for an exception. It is no secret that defenders often get into the opponent’s box for corners and free kicks. The 27-year-old scoring ratio is impressive nonetheless: Hinteregger scored six league goals this season – every one of them after a set-piece situation.
In Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona), the best two players of the last decade are ranked in the top 20 as well. From the Premier League, only Wolves forward Raúl Jiménez (six goals from set-pieces) makes the gallery, although Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) and Chris Wood (Burnley) sit on five goals each as well.
