Scottish Motherwell had an annual loss of GBP 703,391 in the financial year ending May 31st 2009. This has been the first time they have had a deficit in six years and this has been attributed by the club to the collapse of Setanta TV, the inability to finish in the top six in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and the need for pitch repairs. The club spent around GBP 350,000 in 2009 on extensive repairs to the undersoil heating at the pitch in Fir Park.
Chairman John Boyle feels that with the top-six position secured for this season, the club is well set for making this a profitable year. "Following this loss the club took decisive action and I am pleased to confirm that Motherwell Football Club will return to profit for the financial year ending 31 May, 2010. The club is fortunate to be one of the few in the SPL with no bank debt, which enhances our financial position."

Motherwell captain Stephen Craigan has signed a one-year contract extension at Fir Park.
The Northern Ireland defender has followed the lead of midfielder Keith Lasley, who agreed two-year terms earlier on Thursday.
Both players' days at the club looked numbered under former boss Jim Gannon, but they have enjoyed a new lease of life since Craig Brown took charge at the end of 2009.

Walsall full-back Rhys Weston on trial with Motherwell
Motherwell manager Craig Brown has stepped up his bid to strengthen his squad for next season by giving a trial to former Wales defender Rhys Weston.
The 29-year-old Walsall full-back is training with the Fir Park club this week with a view to a possible move to the Scottish Premier League club.
"We invited Rhys to join us so we could have a look at him," said Brown.
"If players don't re-engage who are out of contract, we've got to ensure we've got cover and options."

Jutkiewicz möchte unbedingt in Motherwell bleiben... wäre sicher ein klasse Transfer für Well:
Everton's Lukas Jutkiewicz keen to stay at Motherwell
By John Barnes
Lukas Jutkiewicz hopes Everton do not demand a fee that would prevent his loan move to Motherwell being turned into a permanent one.
"It would be a shame if Everton were to price me out of a move here," said the English striker.
"It wouldn't make sense to ask too much because I'm obviously out of contract next year."
